TURBINE DE-SCALING
For many years Aquamax has assisted Contact Energy and other geothermal operators with their scheduled turbine maintenance. Steam from natural geothermal fields is heavy in minerals, particularly silica which over time form strong deposits on turbine rotating and stationary blading. These deposits degrade the performance of the turbine and must be removed periodically. For over 15 years we have assisted Contact Energy descaling their turbines getting involved with several projects every year. We utilise our ultra-high pressure (40,000 psi), low flow rate equipment which has the cutting power to remove the silica build-up but also allows operators safe flexibility of movement to ensure high productivity and access to detailed areas.
CASE STUDY - CONTACT ENERGY
Contact is New Zealand’s largest producer of geothermal electricity operating five geothermal power stations located in central North Island.
Charley Beagle is responsible for maintaining a wide range of highly specialised plant, turbines, pipeline and general infrastructure at Contact Energy.
A regular challenge is conducting annual shuts to perform essential maintenance on generating equipment. Every hour of downtime comes with significant opportunity cost so planning and reliability is critical.Health and safety management is of utmost importance. In addition to observing good practice, Aquamax operators are keen to work with plant supervisors to initiate improvements.
